Welsh Water Centre

LLANDEGFEDD RESERVOIR

Llandegfedd Visitor Centre opened to the public in April 2015 and forms the centrepiece of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water’s £3m investment at the Llandegfedd reservoir site in South Wales. Following a two-stage competition, Hall + Bednarczyk’s design was chosen by the board of Welsh Water and the practice led the project through detailed design and construction.

The design of the 500m2 visitor centre captures its setting. Approached from the car park above, it presents the sinuous roof form as a fifth elevation that resembles a fluid rectangular gulp taken from the reservoir it overlooks. Sited at the water’s edge, the two-storey building places visitor facilities on the first floor, offering panoramic views. A café and exhibition space address the reservoir, with a service spine of public WC’s and a kitchen/servery arranged to ensure uncluttered public space that can spill out on to a generous balcony. The ground floor accommodation is dedicated to Welsh Water’s management of the site, providing offices, staff changing rooms and a reception area for rangers to welcome reservoir users and monitor activity out on the water.
